The Guy Every Trader Should Know (Besides Me, Of Course!)

I talk a lot about education, specifically how important it is that traders, new and seasoned, always be learning…

They should practice their strategies, keep a trading journal, refresh what they already know, and seek new and reliable resources to add to their knowledge.

The first and simplest way to do this is to tune in to one of our free live webinars here at StockstoTrade.

They run all day and offer trading tips and tricks, information about how we use our proprietary Oracle system and lots more.

Click here to join a session.

You can also listen to my free weekly SteadyTrade Podcast, which I co-host with Matt McCall.

There’s also my StocksToTrade Advisory service…

Every STT Advisory member gets a monthly newsletter with my stock picks, three weekly videos, and more.

And don’t forget about my Premarket Prep

I go live every day at 8:30 a.m. Eastern to review all the trades I see for the coming day and answer subscriber questions.

During yesterday morning’s session, part of the conversation concerned the use of technical analysis during multiple timeframes.

And that led me to a discussion of the expert on the subject.

Every trader should know about him!

Brian Shannon: The Trader’s Trader and His Impact on Modern Technical Analysis

For years, Brian Shannon has been a go-to source for traders, (like me!), looking to better understand the concept of price action through the lens of anchored VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price)

Instead of making things more complicated, he simplifies complex market behavior into digestible, actionable strategies.

Shannon didn’t become successful overnight. Like many traders who’ve stood the test of time, he’s done decades of work, learning and refining his strategies through real-world experience.

The Rise of Anchored VWAP

Let’s start with one of the tools Brian Shannon is most famous for popularizing: anchored VWAP.

Most traders are familiar with traditional VWAP…

If you aren’t, check out my article.

But Shannon took VWAP a step further. He recognized that market turning points—major news events, earnings releases, or even certain price levels—have a lasting impact on a stock’s trading future.

Instead of just using the VWAP from the start of the trading day, anchored VWAP lets traders “anchor” the indicator to specific points.

Traders use this indicator to spot where institutional players are entering and exiting trades.

To be clear, Shannon didn’t invent the concept, but he brought it into the mainstream in a way that’s accessible and practical for day traders, swing traders, and even longer-term investors.

The Power of Experience

One of the things I appreciate most about Brian Shannon is that he’s been in the game for so long.

He’s not some flash-in-the-pan, social media personality trying to sell a quick course. This is a guy who’s lived through different market cycles and his strategies are time-tested, not just built for a bullish market or a single sector.

And Shannon embodies the same philosophies that I do

Trading is about evolving, taking losses, and learning from them so you can come back another day and stay in the game.

He’s an Educator First and a Trader Second

Here’s what I really like about Brian: he’s an educator at heart.

I’m a firm believer that the best traders are the ones who teach others to be better traders.

Shannon’s book, Technical Analysis Using Multiple Timeframes, is a masterclass in this philosophy. It lays out a framework that emphasizes understanding price action from different perspectives.

For example, you might look at a stock on a 1-minute chart, but if you’re not also looking at the bigger picture — the daily, weekly, and even monthly trends — you’re flying blind.

Shannon’s strategy helps traders zoom out and see the forest for the trees… skills that are necessary for anyone who wants to survive the volatility of the market.

By the way, StockstoTrade members have access to five different webinars where we go through Shannon’s book together.

In any case, I urge you to read Technical Analysis Using Multiple Timeframes!

My Final Thoughts…

So, why should you care about Brian Shannon in 2024?

Because his insights are more relevant than ever. In a market that’s constantly evolving — with AI, new regulations, and shifts in retail participation — having a strong foundation is critical.

Shannon’s work with anchored VWAP and his focus on understanding price action across multiple timeframes provide that foundation.

If you haven’t already explored Shannon’s teachings, now’s the time. Whether you’re a newbie or you’ve been trading for years, his insights will only improve your edge and give you the tools to trade smarter, not harder.

Have a great day, everyone. See you back here tomorrow.

P.S.

As a trader, do you want to be stuck on your laptop all day, every day?

I’m guessing the answer is no…

My colleague and seasoned trader, Tim Sykes, has developed an under-the-radar style of trading that will unglue you from your computer.

It all happens over the weekend when the markets are closed…

Tim has made thousands in profits from this strategy.
