How to find stocks with news

Yesterday in the morning SteadyTrade Team webinar, a member asked a great question…

How do people find press releases so fast?

Of course, my first answer is to use the Breaking News Chat. Two former hedge fund traders spoon feed news into the chat room every trading day…

If you don’t have the add-on feature, there’s still a way to get alerted to all the news headlines on StocksToTrade…

But imagine getting into plays before news hits? That’s what millionaire trader Mark Croock does with his ‘shadow trades.’ make sure to RSVP here for all the details!

While we all wait to find out how he finds plays before news hits, read on to learn how you can find news headlines quickly. And how to determine whether the news means there’s a trading opportunity…

How to Find Stocks With News

Within StocksToTrade you can create your own custom news scan. Once you input your criteria, it will pump out stocks with news as the PRs or articles come out.

But keep in mind, this isn’t as fast as the Breaking News Chat that scours news sites and delivers them right to the chat room … But it’s a great option that comes standard in StocksToTrade

Here’s how it works…

To start, click the watchlist symbol on the far left panel. (It looks like an eyeball.)

Then click ‘custom news scan’ and ‘create new.’ This is what it looks like…

Once you click ‘create new’ it will give you a list of stocks with news that will update throughout the day. Here’s what came up at midday yesterday…

But not all the stocks on the list with news will be tradeable. Some will be large-cap names you may not be able to trade with your small account

And others will be so illiquid, there’s no way you could exit if you bought in…

…Plus, sifting through all those stocks trying to determine what headlines matter can waste a lot of time.

So instead of looking through every stock manually, simply filter the list…

Click the wrench button on the right of the list and select ‘filter results’ from the drop-down menu.

That will bring up the filter criteria shown below on the left…

Now you can enter all the criteria for the stocks you like to trade based on price, % gain, volume, and even float.

Once you have a list of stocks with news that matches your criteria, how do you know which headlines matter?

Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together

When it comes to press releases, I don’t anticipate — I react. And that’s what I teach in the SteadyTrade Team…

So when a PR drops, I don’t necessarily care.

The only news that matters is news that creates a reaction.

Here’s an example from yesterday…

In premarket, Elevation Oncology, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELEV) dropped a cancer PR

Someone asked about it on Pre-Market Prep

I said it’s OK … But the press release had been out for an hour and it only traded 1 million in volume…

So I didn’t care too much about it.

Later in premarket the volume came in … But the only thing I care about is whether the stock can survive the open and have a dip and rip or afternoon VWAP hold. That’s it.

I don’t believe any of these junky penny stock PRs.

And if you buy into a stock based only on news, you’ll get destroyed over time. Because for every stock that runs on a BS press release, nine others fail.

Instead of ‘buying the PR,’ look for patterns and box checkers.

Consider these criteria to determine what makes a stock a good potential trade

  • Volume
  • Float
  • Chart history (is it a former runner?)
  • Is it a chat pump?
  • Are shorts trapped?

Once you put those puzzle pieces together — with the news catalyst — then you can determine which pattern you’ll watch for and plan your trade from there.

Get my step-by-step guide to find the best stocks to trade here. (If you want to skip to my rant, jump ahead to the 7-minute mark.)

So while knowing the news is important, there’s way more to consider before jumping in a trade.

And don’t forget about Mark Croock’s upcoming event. Learn how he spots trades before news comes out here. (Yep, even in this ugly market.)

Have a great day everyone. See you back here tomorrow.
